2. MI Man Deserves Praise, Not Firing For Giving ‘Found Gun’ To Police

BELLEVUE, WA – -(Ammoland.com)- Wayne County, MI employee John Chevilott should be honored, not fired for turning over a loaded gun to the police that he found while on the job, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

“This man was fired by the Wayne County Department of Public Services for doing the right thing,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “We are stunned that this situation has continued for two weeks. Wayne County officials need to correct this nonsense.”

Chevilott found the gun while he was mowing the grass in the Brightmoor neighborhood, according to published reports. He picked up the gun, which had been damaged by a lawnmower and held it hoping to turn it over to the police, after he called to report the discovery. When police didn’t respond, he kept the gun and drove it to a police station after his shift. The gun turned out to have been stolen in 2005.

“The police reportedly commended Chevilott,” Gottlieb noted, “but his bosses fired him for ‘violating policy.’ Since when is it policy in Wayne County, or anywhere else, to simply leave a loaded gun lying around where it might be picked up by a child? Are morons in charge in Wayne County?”

In addition to firing Chevilott, the county also suspended his supervisor for 30 days. The local labor union has filed a grievance on Chevilott’s behalf.

“The policy Chevilott violated forbids employees from having weapons while on the job,” Gottlieb observed, “but that’s aimed at the carrying of personal weapons, not picking up loose guns found on the job and turning them over to police. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the difference, and for Mr. Chevilott’s bosses to take such an inflexible position suggests it is bullheaded stubbornness, and nothing else, that is guiding their decision.

“Mr. Chevilott should be immediately reinstated with full back pay,” Gottlieb said. “He clearly exercised responsibility by taking that gun off the street. What he did demonstrates far more civic leadership than his bosses at Wayne County.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. The Citizens Committee can be reached by phone at (425) 454-4911, on the Internet at www.ccrkba.org or by email to InformationRequest@ccrkba.org.

3. Buying Your First Machine Gun, Silencer or Short Barreled Rifle

Buying Your First Machine Gun, Silencer or Short Barreled Rifle

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

USA --(Ammoland.com)- Did you know that as a civilian, depending on the county and state where you live, you can legally own a machinegun or suppressor?

Perhaps you do know this but you don’t know the process. To those who are committed to NFA firearm ownership, the process is not as daunting as some might think. All that is required is a good deal of money and patience.

Your first question might be what is NFA?
NFA is the National Firearms Act which put restrictions on civilian ownership of machine guns, short-barreled rifles, and suppressors. The law originally went into effect in 1934 and was revised in 1968. To own a firearm defined by NFA, a civilian must apply for the right to own the firearm through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and pay $200 for a tax stamp which will allow the firearm to be transferred from one owner to another.

There is an upside and downside to having the ability to own a machine gun or suppressor as a civilian. The upside is you have the ability as a citizen to own a machine gun or suppressor. The downside is you will have to fork over a HUGE amount of money to buy the MP5 like the one Bruce Willis uses to kill the terrorists in Die Hard.

Also, you are going to have to settle for something that was manufactured prior to May 19, 1986 (short-barreled rifles and suppressors excluded).

Additionally, you will need to check local laws to learn if you can legally own a NFA item in your area, pay the ATF the $200 transfer tax, fill out paperwork, have a local chief law enforcement officer sign off on the idea of you owning an NFA item, submit fingerprints and passport photos, and sit and wait for up to six months for the ATF to process the paperwork. Tap, tap, tap.

Or, you can simplify the process and assign your NFA firearms and suppressors to a living trust. This will allow you to skip the hassles of getting local law enforcement approval and fingerprints. See guntrustlawyer.com for details about creating a trust.

Another benefit of having a trust is you will have the ability to assign trustees who can use, possess, and transport your NFA goods. Depending on your state, you may also have the ability to conceal carry your machine pistol with a CCW permit. Check your local laws for details.

To create your gun trust you will need to work with a lawyer. Don’t try to do this with some at-home software like Quicken. It is important you use someone who knows the law well. When I had my trust created, I hired the Gun Trust Lawyer David Goldman. I suggest you use him or someone equally knowledgeable. Having a lawyer will give you a resource every time you have a question. And trust me; you will have questions along the way.

Gun Rights Policies with John Snyder

Arlington, VA - The year of decision comes to a head with the November elections and voters will have to decide, do they want big government, higher taxes and less freedom or the USA that the founding fathers imagined when they penned the Bill of Rights.

The choice should be easy, but it is one each of us must make this November 2012.

5. Anti-Hunting Bill Passes California Senate

U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- California Senate Bill 1221, a bill that will ban the use of hounds to hunt black bears and bobcats, passed the state’s Senate today.

The passage of SB 1221 by the senate casts a dark cloud over the future of all hunting and wildlife management in California. Senate Bill 1221 passed with a vote of 22 to 15 in favor.

The bill, which is sponsored by the radical animal rights group Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), triggered a strong outpouring of opposition from California sportsmen and women, plus sportsmen’s organizations, in the state and nationwide.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) denounced this retaliatory wildlife management bill that was created when HSUS could not have a state game commissioner removed for his legal mountain lion hunt. As the bill moved forward from introduction and through the hearing process, hundreds of opponents wearing orange “NO on SB 1221” buttons also packed the corridors of the capital to let their Senators know they opposed this anti-hunting bill.

“The California Senate today chose retribution and revenge over sound science-based wildlife management,” explained Evan Heusinkveld, USSA’s director of state services. “Despite having a Fish and Game Commission explicitly designed to handle these questions free from the politics of the statehouse, the California Senate voted in favor of a hunting ban.”

USSA has been working with the Masters of Foxhounds Association, California Houndsmen for Conservation and the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance to defeat SB 1221.

Fast Facts on SB 1221

  • The bill would outlaw the use of hounds to hunt bears and bobcats.
  • Hunting bears and bobcats with hounds has been legal since the state formally organized a game commission and established game management and hunting laws.
  • Hounds are actually used in wildlife management practices and projects.
  • Hunters using hounds to pursue bears actually take fewer bears than is recommended by the state’s game department.
  • This bill is being pushed by the radical animal rights group —the Humane Society of the United States— the same group that has pushed anti-farming and puppy mill bills in California in the past.

6. Coalition of Attorneys General Want National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- As we reported last November, the ongoing effort to fully vindicate the fundamental, individual right to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense took a major step forward with House passage of H.R. 822, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011.”

The bill, sponsored by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), has 245 cosponsors and was approved in the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.

After passage in the House, the bill was sent to the Senate, where it remains.  Since November, the Senate has failed to take any significant action on the bill.

Recently, the Attorneys General of 22 states and the territory of Guam wrote a letter of support for H.R. 822 to Reps. Stearns and Shuler, stating in part, “While some have suggested this legislation would endanger public safety, our experience suggests the opposite.  Individuals with concealed carry permits from our states have proven to be more law-abiding than non-licensees, and in many instances have been able to defend themselves and others effectively from criminal attack.  Many of our states also have laws recognizing out-of-state permits, and people carrying concealed handguns under those laws have done so without any unusual problems.”

The Attorneys General also urged the Senate to take action on the bill.

H.R. 822 would allow any person with a valid state-issued concealed firearm permit to carry a concealed firearm in any state that issues concealed firearm permits, or that does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms for lawful purposes. A state’s laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried would apply within its borders. The bill applies to D.C., Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. It would not create a federal licensing system; rather, it would require the states to recognize each others’ carry permits, just as they recognize drivers’ licenses and carry permits held by armored car guards.  Rep. Stearns has introduced such legislation since 1995.

7. After Passage of Sportsmens Heritage Act, BLM Backs Down on Shooting Ban

NRA-ILA

NRA - ILA

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- On May 11, the Bureau of Land Management announced that it was abandoning the effort to ban recreational shooting on the Sonoran Desert National Monument in Arizona.

BLM released a new proposed management plan that protects “monument objects and values” through best management practices, but does not close the monument to shooters.

This announcement is a major victory for gun owners, as it reversed BLM’s intent to close the half million-acre SDNM to recreational shooting.  The original SDNM plan mirrored BLM’s decision last year to drive shooters out of the Ironwood Forest National Monument, also in Arizona.

BLM’s announcement came as a formal statement to the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council, a federal advisory council that reports to the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture on matters relating to hunting and recreational shooting.

The abrupt reversal by the BLM came shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. R. 4089, “The Sportsmen’s Heritage Act.” One of the major provisions of that legislation requires congressional approval for any recreational shooting restrictions proposed on BLM-managed national monuments. The bill further directs the BLM to manage national monument land in a manner that supports, promotes, and enhances recreational shooting opportunities.

The BLM’s reversal is likely to be used by opponents of H. R. 4089 in their efforts to stop passage of the bill in the Senate.  Rest assured NRA will continue its efforts to win passage of this vital legislation. H. R. 4089 is needed to reverse BLM actions already taken to ban recreational shooting elsewhere–in 2010, the BLM closed 400,000 acres of publicly-owned, national monument lands in three states–and to prevent BLM from taking future action to ban recreational shooting in the monuments it manages.

8. Eric Holder & USDOJ Behind Dangerous New Proposal To Restrict Rights Of Illinois Gun Owners
Date/Time : 5/21/2012 9:30:58 PM
Direct link : http://www.ammoland.com/2012/05/21/eric-holder-usdoj-behind-dangerous-new-proposal-to-restrict-rights-of-illinois-gun-owners/

YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!

Illinois State Rifle Association

Illinois State Rifle Association

Illinois --(Ammoland.com)- BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Illinois State Police are teaming up to pass legislation to destroy your right to privacy and your gun rights in exchange for federal grant money.

HOW THEY PLAN TO DO IT: Representative Cynthia Soto – an ardent Chicago Gun Grabber – recently used parliamentary procedure to hijack an anti-drug bill (SB1034) and turn it into one of the most dangerous anti-gun bills ever put before the Illinois General Assembly.

It has been determined that Rep. Soto is just a minor player in this effort and that ERIC HOLDER and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) are behind this assault on your rights. The DOJ has promised the Illinois State Police that they will get millions of dollars in federal grants if this legislation is passed. Holder feels that, if he waves a few dollars under the noses of the Illinois State Police, then they’ll sell legal gun owners down the river.

OUR MESSAGE TO ERIC HOLDER AND THE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE: “Sorry folks. . . our freedom isn’t for sale!”

WHAT PASSAGE OF SB1034 WOULD MEAN:

  1. You would be forced to disclose your Social Security Number to the Illinois State Police when you apply for a FOID card. Disclosing your Social Security Number to the State Police would give them unlimited access to your personal information to include your credit records, your tax returns, your payroll information and even whether you owe overdue fines at the local library. There is no reason for the State Police to have your Social Security Number except to find a way to take your guns away.
  2. SB1034 would pretty much eliminate the reinstatement process for FOID holders who had their cards revoked for whatever reason. Thus, thousands of persons not prohibited under federal law from owning firearms would be denied their rights by the Illinois State Police with little hope of successful appeal.
  3. In a deliberate attempt to thin the ranks of lawful gun owners, SB1034 greatly broadens the definition of “domestic violence” situations that would lead to your guns being confiscated. For example, if you and your brother get in a shoving match over the outcome of a Bears game, then you both lose your gun rights PERMANENTLY. If you discipline your children in a manner that some busybody doesn’t like, you lose your gun rights FOREVER. This provision of SB1034 falls into the bucket of “any excuse to take guns away.”
  4. SB1034 would impose A MINIMUM 60-DAY WAITING PERIOD ON FIREARMS AND AMMO PURCHASES for new residents of the state. There is no other purpose for this provision other than to encourage gun owners to leave their guns behind before moving into Illinois.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO SAVE YOUR GUN RIGHTS:

  1. Contact your State Representative and State Senator and politely tell the person who answers the phone that you are a law-abiding firearm owner who opposes SB1034 and that you expect your State Representative and State Senator to vote AGAINST SB1034. Remind the person that this is an election year and that you will not vote for your rep or senator if they vote for SB1034. If you do not know who your State Representative or State Senator is, then click this link to go to the Illinois Board of Elections: http://www.elections.state.il.us/DistrictLocator/DistrictOfficialSearchByAddress.aspx .
  2. Please circulate this alert to all your gun-owning friends and ask them to contact their elected officials as well.
  3. Please post this alert to any and all internet blogs, bulletin boards, and social networking websites to which you may belong.
  4. Please make a generous donation to the ISRA by going to: http://isra.org/fight_4_your_rights/

Steyr Arms

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama --(Ammoland.com)- Steyr Arms has announced an across-the-board price reduction on its lineup of popular pistols for a limited time.

All M-A1, S-A1 and C9-A1 handguns will carry an MSRP of $560, offering an $89 savings for consumers.

All three Steyr pistol models are functionally identical, with variations in barrel lengths, grips and capacities. The M-A1 is the full-size pistol with a 4-inch cold-hammer-forged barrel, a full-length grip and high-capacity box magazine, while the S-A1 is the compact pistol with a 3.6-inch barrel, shortened grip and a 10-round magazine. Both handguns are available chambered in either 9x19mm Luger or .40 S&W. Available only in 9mm, the C9-A1 features a 3.6-inch barrel, a full-length grip with a high-capacity magazine. All barrels are cold-hammer forged with conventional rifling, and chambers are fully supported.

Steyr pistols feature innovative polymer frames that offer unparalleled ergonomics with a high grip and low barrel axis that mitigates muzzle rise, as well as a perfect grip angle for a very natural point of aim. The frames include Picatinny rails for easy mounting of illumination and laser-aiming devices. The integrated trigger safety on the Steyr pistols offers a Reset Action Systemtrigger that requires positive finger pressure to operate the double-action-only design. This recently redesigned trigger mechanism provides an exceptionally smooth trigger pull and a clean, consistent break.

Steyr pistols are highly regarded for their comfortable ergonomics, low bore axis, remarkable safety features, intuitive sighting system, amazing accuracy and extreme reliability. And now, they are available to American shooters at an even better price.

Established in 1864 in Steyr, Austria, Steyr Arms is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious firearms manufacturers. Steyr’s comprehensive lines of premium hunting rifles, precision sporting and tactical rifles, and striker-fired handguns are technically mature, and their subtle elegance also communicates the harmony between appearance and substance. NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- The National Shooting Sports Foundation is offering schools the opportunity to receive –free of charge-- educational videos about firearm safety and wildlife conservation.

The firearm safety videos help teach students how to react when encountering a firearm in an unsupervised situation. The conservation titles educate students on how wildlife and wild lands are protected, and how hunters support this effort with contributions amounting to more than $1 billion annually.

NSSF believes all teachers and their students, whether in public, private or home schools, can benefit from the important messages in the videos, which are contained on two DVDs. Both the Firearm Safety DVD and Conservation DVD can be ordered online. The three separate videos contained on each DVD can be previewed online as well.

The Firearm Safety DVD offers these three videos–“McGruff the Crime Dog on Gun Safety” for students in kindergarten through grade 6, “It’s Your Call: Playing It Safe Around Guns” for students in grades 6 through 9 and “Firearms Safety Depends on You,” which covers the ten commandments of gun safety and is for audiences of all ages. The first two titles help teach students how to respond if should they encounter a firearm in an unsupervised situation at school, at home or at a friend’s home.

The Conservation DVD contains “Wildlife for Tomorrow” which is designed for students in grades 4 through 7, and two other videos, “The Unendangered Species” and “What They Say About Hunting,” which are for students in grades 7 through 12. “Wildlife for Tomorrow” and “The Unendangered Species” tell the story of how game animals such as the wild turkey, white-tailed deer and Rocky Mountain elk were once endangered and have been restored to abundance. “What They Say About Hunting” takes a close look at hunting and its relevance today through a pro-and-con debate.

Teachers in more than 100,000 schools nationwide have shown these videos to students in their classrooms and praised them for handling the topics with sensitivity.

11. Gun Grabber Nominated to New Hampshire Supreme Court

Direct link : http://www.ammoland.com/2012/05/21/gun-grabber-nominated-to-new-hampshire-supreme-court/

New Hampshire Firearms Coalition

New Hampshire Firearms Coalition

Milford, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Recently, Governor Lynch nominated James Bassett to the NH Supreme Court.

You probably already know how important the Supreme Court is to many issues in the state.

What you may not know, however, is how critical the makeup of the Supreme Court will shortly be to firearms owners here in New Hampshire.

Just within the last few years, the Supreme Court has severely undermined two important firearms rights laws, Range Protection and our carry license law.

You see, in a couple of cases in the last few years, the Supreme Court’s misinterpretation the “suitable person” language in our carry license law had opened the door for police chiefs to deny pistol licenses to law abiding applicants.

And that is not all, another misinterpretation by the Supreme Court, this time of NH’s Range Protection law, seriously hurt NH firearms owners.

You see, not very long after the Range Protection law was passed in 2004, the Supreme Court gutted one key provision that would have protected ranges from being required to comply with new onerous noise ordinances simply because the range’s paperwork wasn’t quite in order when they first started shooting.

With the NH Supreme Court so hostile to gun rights, we cannot afford another justice who doesn’t fully support the right to bear arms.

Unfortunately, James Bassett has a history of opposing the Second amendment. When Mr. Bassett ran for Congress as a republican back in 1994, he was a supporter of the Brady Bill, with its waiting periods and burdensome background checks.

I wish I could tell you that the important firearms related cases were behind us, and that another gun-grabber on the Supreme Court would be a minor inconvenience.

That is simply not the case, however. You see, there is lawsuit on going right now that has the potential to seriously effect thousands of Gun-owners around the state.

At issue: NH’s preemption statute.

Already firearms owners, like you and I, have lost two preliminary decisions where a lower court has misinterpreted the law to apply only to cities and towns, leaving us open to gun-grabbing regulations created by a host of anti-gun unelected bureaucrats at the state level.

When preemption was passed back in 2003, it was supposed to restrict the field of firearms regulation to just the legislature.

If the Supreme Court follows the lower court’s lead when this case gets to them, you and I will have lost a significant portion of the protections of that law.

That is why we cannot afford to have a gun-grabber like James Bassett on the Supreme Court.

The Executive Council just held a hearing Friday on his nomination, and could vote as soon as Wednesday.

My sources are telling me two Councilors, St. Hilaire and Burton, have already made up their mind to support the nomination.

Unfortunately, that means we need to convince all three of the remaining Councilors to reject the Governor’s nomination of Mr. Bassett or the balance of the court could shift even further to the gun grabbers for the foreseeable future.

That its why I need your help.

I need you to call and/or email the three other Councilors today. Let them know that it is irresponsible to trust a man to interpret the rest of the Constitution, when he doesn’t respect or understand the Second amendment to the Federal Constitution or Article 2-a of the NH Constitution.

The vote could come as soon as Wednesday, please call and/or email the councilors today. They all share an office number in Concord, 603-271-3632, or, better yet, call them each individually:

  • David Wheeler, District 5, 603-672-6062, dwheeler@nh.gov
  • Ray Wieczorek, District 4, 603-624-1655, or 603-345-0304, rwieczorek@nh.gov
  • Chris Sununu, District 3, 603-658-1187, csununu@nh.gov

If we don’t stop James Bassett from getting on the Supreme Court now, he won’t just affect this one case that is likely to come before the court in the next year or so, he could continue to make anti-gun ruling for 15 years before he would be replaced.

That is something you and I can’t let happen.

That is why I need you to call the Executive Councilors at 603-271-3632 today.

In Liberty,
Jonathan R Evans

We Must Stop This Outrageous Bill – SB1034

Power Grab

Outrageous Bill is Power Grab by Illinois State Police

IllinoisCarry.com

IllinoisCarry.com

Illinois --(Ammoland.com)- There’s been lots of talk in the last couple of days about SB1034, a bill that has morphed from a child tattoo law into a FOID modifying power grab by Illinois State Police.

In a routine audit of the FOID system by the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services, it was determined that the Illinois State Police was lacking in their reporting of people convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors and prohibiting them from buying/possessing firearms.

The CJIS reviewed the Illinois State Police’s response to the audit and found it still inadequate. Now the U.S. Depart. of Justice threatens that if the Illinois State Police does not address these issues, the FBI will not be able to continue to provide CJIS system access to the Illinois State Police.

That means that the Illinois State Police will no longer be able to run NCIS checks through the CJIS. Translated: No retail gun sales in the state of Illinois.

Here we are at the eleventh hour of voting on bills before recessing for the summer and instead of just correcting their continued shortcomings, the Illinois State Police is using this as an excuse for a power grab that calls for much broader definitions of domestic violence than the federal laws do and adds more misdemeanor offenses to the list of DV convictions that prohibit firearm ownership. SB1034 also allows the Illinois State Police to enter into the judicial review process when appealing a FOID revocation where they were not involved before.

Illinois Carry has no problem with prohibiting possession of firearms for violent offenders and those who commit violence against family members. But for the guy/gal that was charged with DV by an overzealous State’s Attorney in a nasty divorce case, and later pled to a non DV misdemeanor because he/she couldn’t afford the fees or the time to fight it, this could mean the forfeiture of the FOID and would mean no gun ownership ever again.

This bill goes way over the top and must be stopped!

Urgent! Contact your State Representative AND your State Senator today - tell them to oppose SB1034

Ray City, GA --(Ammoland.com)- Outdoor Television Personality, Neal Rohrbach, and his teammate, tournament angler John Chatham, teamed up with krugerfarms.com to fish for the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Charity Bass Tournament on May 18th and 19th in Palatka, Florida.

The duo pledged to donate any winnings back to the charity, however tough luck and a competitive field yielded only 11lbs and 15oz worth of keeper bass, which didn’t bring home a check for the Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

In the spirit of giving, Rohrbach has put his tournament jersey up for auction at http://auction.outdoorchanneloutfitters.com, with 100% of the winning bid being donated to Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

“We didn’t have any trouble catching fish, just big fish,” shared Rohrbach. “We probably fished harder than any other tournament because we were fishing for the kids. When it wasn’t our fate to make a donation back to the charity, I figured I’d put my tournament jersey up for auction, and raise a little more money for the hospital.”

Rohrbach’s tournament jersey includes his sponsors and partners from krugerfarms.com, K2 Coolers, Goey Hunting Calls, Onyx, Rapala, Limit Gear, Costa del Mar, Shimano, Trigger X, Minn Kota, Wildlife Energy Drink, Sufix, VMC, Outdoor Channel, and a tribute to breast cancer awareness, Autism Speaks, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Lew’s and Snag Proof both supported Rohrbach and Chatham as well.

Rohrbach grew up hunting and fishing on the family farm in Clarksburg, Missouri and has been shouldering a shotgun and wetting a hook since well before he had his driver’s license. He hosted all 26 episodes of the popular Outdoor Channel television show, Outdoor Channel Outfitters, in 2011. In 2012 he chased ducks and geese from the Prairie Pothole Region to the gulf coast in segments for Outfitters Showcase and will be co-hosting Ultimate Outdoors, airing on Outdoor Channel starting in July.

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Last week, the Michigan House Judiciary Committee held a hearing to review an important and long-overdue bill that would eliminate the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements.

This committee heard House Bill 5225 and considered amendment language that will be used as a substitute for HB 5225.  The committee will again consider HB 5225 next week with a possible vote on Thursday, May 24.

HB 5225, introduced by state Representative Paul Opsommer (R-93), would abolish the bureaucratic “permit-to-purchase” handguns which became obsolete when the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) took effect in 1998. Under the current state system, gun buyers must apply with their local law enforcement agency and pass a written test before being authorized to buy a handgun.  This “permit” is valid for only one gun and it expires after ten days. Since 1998, federal law has required a national criminal records check for the purchase of any firearm from any gun dealer in every state. Some of the key points of the proposed amendment to HB 5225 are:

  • Repeal the state requirement for someone to ask for police permission to purchase a firearm by traveling to a local police station and obtaining a permit to purchase.
  • Repeal the requirement to register a completely legally purchased and owned firearm by a law-abiding citizen to be registered with the government through the police.
  • Adopt the use of the federally-funded National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
  • Default to the federal standard of prohibited persons and each purchase would still require a background check.
  • Cut Michigan’s costs by using the federally-administered instant background check system and eliminate wasted man-hours of tracking lawful gun owners in Michigan.

The NRA has been working diligently to repeal this antiquated, costly and unnecessary obstacle for gun owners and has coordinated with several state Representatives to produce new language for HB 5225.   Two companion bills are also moving through the House: House Bill 5498, sponsored by state Representative Richard LeBlanc (D-18), and House Bill 5499, sponsored by state Representative Ray Franz (R-101).

21. Gun Control Column Once Again Uses Anti-Logic Against Freedom

Missoula, MT --(Ammoland.com)- In his typically anti-gun, anti-freedom (May 18 http://tiny.cc/2qaoew ) guest column, University of Montana math professor Bob McKelvey makes a striking error of basic logic that readers would not expect from a mathematician.

After throwing out the typical but long-discredited array of anti-gun myths, the essence of McKelvey’s argument is that because Montanans are allowed to own firearms they’ve purchased privately from other citizens, then Montana people with concealed weapon permits, sheriff-certified responsible citizens, should not be allowed to exercise their permits when traveling in other states.

Huh? Right.

The argument is illogical and nonsensical, as are the usual arguments made by the virulent anti-gun crowd who simply don’t trust ordinary people for good conduct.

Those with this attitude are hostile to individual freedom, trusting only elites such as themselves to dictate state-controlled conduct for others.

McKelvey gives this away when he describes the NRA as having a “devotion to the individual gun owner above the welfare of society at large …”

Earth to McKelvey: We live in a constitutional republic, the very purpose of which is to protect the rights of the individual from the mob (and anti-rights advocates like McKelvey). True, if we lived in a rights-unfriendly, socialist country, the state-controlled society McKelvey advocates would become fact.

However, as long as we live in a constitutional republic, the NRA and other similar entities will continue to properly assert the individual rights that are the birthright of every individual (including McKelvey’s freedom to espouse his nonsensical opinions).

22. PA Game Commission Advises Motorists To Watch For Deer

Direct link : http://www.ammoland.com/2012/05/21/pa-game-commission-advises-motorists-to-watch-for-deer-3/

Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania --(Ammoland.com)- Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today urged motorists to stay alert and slow down when driving after dusk and before dawn to reduce their risk of colliding with a white-tailed deer.

“Each spring, deer congregate on the grassy areas along the state’s busy highways, and cover greater distances in search of food,” Roe said. “This activity makes vehicle collisions with deer all but inevitable.

“For the sake of public safety, the Game Commission is asking motorists to watch for deer and to drive defensively after dark and before sunrise, which is when deer are most active. Your efforts can help to keep accidents to a minimum, which, in turn, will reduce or eliminate hardships to your family and other Pennsylvanians.”

Roe noted that being more knowledgeable about deer can help Pennsylvanians steer clear of a deer-vehicle collision. For instance, in spring, young deer – last year’s fawns – are on the move as does chase them away to prepare to give birth to this year’s fawns. Yearling does usually travel no farther than necessary and will often later reunite with the doe after her new fawns begin traveling with her. However, young bucks typically disperse farther to set up their own home range.

“Unfortunately, these young deer make tragic mistakes when crossing roads in spring and moving through areas unfamiliar to them,” said Roe. “They’re no longer following the leader, they’re moving independently. And that increases the potential for an accident, especially in areas harboring large deer populations.”

If a deer steps onto a road, Roe said, motorists should slow down and come to a controlled stop as soon as possible, and turn on their hazard flashers. Stopping may not be an option on busy highways, unless the driver can reach the shoulder of the road.

“Don’t risk trying to drive around a deer,” Roe said. “Since deer usually move in single file, more deer may be following, so you should stop, or at least slow down, to make sure all deer have passed.

“Also, deer sometimes abruptly reverse their direction right after crossing a road. This is a defensive mechanism that often kicks in when deer are startled, and they retrace their footsteps to other deer they’re traveling with or return to an area they’ve already checked for danger.”

Deer in northern counties spend a good deal of time in spring feeding on the tender shoots in grassy areas alongside busy highways. Motorists should slow down immediately whenever they see grazing deer along roads. While deer dining next to busy highways and interstates are often not bothered by the traffic, deer along rural roads seem less tolerant and are more edgy.

“The only thing predictable about whitetails is that they’re definitely unpredictable,” Roe said. “The moment you think you have them figured out, they start showing you something new.

“However, we also know that deer are creatures of habit. If you see a deer-crossing sign posted along a road you’re traveling, it’s a good idea to slow down especially around dawn and dusk. These signs are placed in areas where deer have been crossing roads for years. Ignoring these signs is asking for trouble.”

Drivers who hit a deer are not required to report the accident to the Game Commission. If the deer dies, only Pennsylvania residents may claim the carcass. To do so, they must call the Game Commission for a permit number within 24 hours of taking possession of the deer.

However, to report a dead deer for removal from state roads, motorists can call the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at 1-800-FIX-ROAD.

The permit number issued by the agency lets meat processors and law enforcement officials know that possession of the deer is legal, and not the result of poaching. Antlers from bucks killed in vehicle collisions must be turned over to the Game Commission.

If a deer is struck by a vehicle, but not killed, drivers are urged to stay their distance because some deer may recover and move on. However, if a deer does not move on, or poses a public safety risk, drivers are encouraged to report the incident to a Game Commission regional office or other local law enforcement agency. If the deer must be put down, the Game Commission will direct the proper person to do so.

Other tips for motorists:

  • * Stay alert and don’t count on deer whistles or deer fences to deter deer from crossing roads in front of you. Deer can’t hear ultrasonic frequencies and there is no scientific evidence that deer whistles are effective.
  • * Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and for deer silhouettes on the shoulders of roads. If anything looks slightly suspicious, slow down.
  • * Slow down in areas known to have a large deer population; where deer-crossing signs are posted; places where deer commonly cross roads or are struck by motorists; areas where roads divide agricultural fields from forests; and whenever in forested areas between dusk and dawn.
  • * Deer do unpredictable things. Sometimes they stop in the middle of the road when crossing. Sometimes they cross and quickly re-cross back from where they came. Sometimes they move toward an approaching vehicle. Assume nothing. Slow down, blow your horn to urge the deer to leave the road. Stop if a deer stays on the road; don’t try to go around it.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Natural Resources Commission honored Mary Ann Van Lokeren with a Partner in Conservation Award at its Thursday, May 17, meeting in Onaway, Mich.

Van Lokeren was recognized for her help in restoring wildlife habitat on the site of an abandoned Emmet County correctional facility.

A retired businesswoman and long-time conservation enthusiast, Van Lokeren took it upon herself to see that the former Camp Pellston Correctional Facility, which was located on state forest land, would be restored to wildlife habitat. Van Lokeren (who lives in Southeast Michigan and has a seasonal home in Emmet County) provided funding and recruited three other families, who also have seasonal homes in the area, to help pay for the effort.

The project involved razing the buildings and fences at the abandoned facility last December. Habitat restoration was completed when the area was graded, raked and seeded this spring.

“Ms. Van Lokeren’s dedication and leadership were indispensable in restoring the Camp Pellston area,” said Department of Natural Resources Director Rodney Stokes. “The citizens of Michigan owe Mary Ann a big thank you.”

Van Lokeren, who has worked with the Nature Conservancy and Ducks Unlimited on habitat issues in the past and serves on the board of the Little Traverse Conservancy, described the project as “a win-win situation for everyone.”

“Now the land is beautiful once again and available for people to use,” she said. Partner in Conservation Awards are bestowed periodically upon individuals and groups (nominated by DNR staffers) who have made extraordinary contributions to natural resources protection in Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr

Taking Aim at United Nations Gun Ban

Senator Moran Leads Efforts Against U.N. Gun Ban Treaty

NRA-ILA

NRA - ILA

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- By now, every gun owner concerned about the future of our right to keep and bear arms is aware that the international gun eradication movement has been working for more than a decade to achieve a U.N. Arms Trade Treaty that would cover not only tanks, helicopters, and other heavy weapons, but also rifles, shotguns and handguns.

As called for by a resolution adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2009, a conference will be held in July 2012, in New York City, to draft the treaty’s language. On a parallel track, the ridiculously named Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects–held its most recent Preparatory Conference in New York earlier this year.

NRA has tracked the Programme and the Arms Trade Treaty process since their inceptions, with NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action even acquiring “non-governmental organization” status to give it greater ability to monitor the progress and direction of these insidious efforts.

In March of this year, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kans.) introduced legislation to prevent any arms treaty from infringing the right to keep and bear arms in the United States.  The “Second Amendment Sovereignty Act,S. 2205, would prohibit the administration from using “the voice, vote, and influence of the United States, in connection with negotiations for a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, to restrict in any way the rights of United States citizens under the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, or to otherwise regulate domestic manufacture, assembly, possession, use, transfer, or purchase of firearms, ammunition, or related items, including  small arms, light weapons, or related materials.”

Last year, Sen. Moran and 57 other senators signed a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reminding them that the Senate has final say on treaties, and stating their unequivocal opposition to any treaty that would affect civilian ownership of firearms, challenge the authority of Congress to regulate firearms within the United States, or call for an international gun registry.

This week, Sen. Moran spoke to his colleagues in the Senate about S. 2205, saying:

“More than two centuries ago, our founding fathers wisely amended the United States Constitution to guarantee a Bill of Rights for its citizens. Since then, our democracy has stood strong as Americans have enjoyed liberties unparalleled in the world – including the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.”

“Today, our freedoms and our country’s sovereignty are in danger of being undermined by the United Nations. To ensure our liberties remain for our generation and future generations, I am offering legislation to protect the rights of American gun owners from the effects of a U.N. arms treaty.”

“Given where the process stands today, I am gravely concerned this treaty will infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of American gun owners. I am also concerned it will be used by other countries who do not share our freedoms, to wrongly place the burden of controlling international crime and terrorism on law-abiding American citizens.”

“Mr. President, I urge my colleagues in the Senate to adopt this commonsense legislation. On July 22 of last year, fifty-seven U.S. Senators joined me in reminding the Obama Administration that our firearm freedoms are not negotiable. We notified President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton of our intent to oppose ratification of a treaty that in any way restricts Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Our opposition is strong enough to block the treaty from passage, as treaties submitted to the U.S. Senate require two-thirds approval to be ratified.”

“As the treaty process continues, the Second Amendment Sovereignty Act seeks to further reinforce to the Administration that our country’s sovereignty and firearm freedoms must not be infringed upon by an international organization made up of many countries with little respect for gun rights. America leads the world in export standards to ensure arms are transferred for legitimate purposes and my bill will make certain that law-abiding Americans are not wrongfully punished.”

“In the days ahead, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure an Arms Trade Treaty that undermines the Constitutional rights of American gun owners is dead on arrival in the Senate.”

To listen to the full speech, please click here.

The purpose of the Programme’s most recent PrepCom was to lay the groundwork for a “Review Conference” scheduled to begin in August, by which time we should know what will have come out of the treaty drafting conference to be held in July.  In the meantime, please contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to sponsor and support Sen. Moran’s bill.

Restriction on Funding U.N. Gun Ban Treaty

In a related and very significant development this week, U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg’s (R-Mont.) amendment to restrict the use of federal funds for advocating or lobbying for a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty passed the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations by a bi-partisan vote of 30 to 20.  This important amendment mandates that no taxpayer funds may be used to negotiate a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty that would restrict the Second Amendment rights of any United States citizen or regulate firearms or ammunition.

“Taxpayer funds should not be used to lobby against our constitutional rights.  Law-abiding Americans have the right to keep and bear arms.  The scope of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty could drastically undermine this constitutional right.  The NRA firmly believes that the U.N. should never be allowed to be the arbiter of American freedom,” said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox.  “The NRA would like to thank Congressman Rehberg for his leadership and for offering this vital amendment in support of the Second Amendment.”

26. Pro-Gun Constitutional Amendment Up for Final Vote in Louisiana House on May 24

NRA-ILA

NRA - ILA

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Last Thursday, May 24, the Louisiana House will vote on Senate Bill 303, a constitutional amendment protecting the right to keep and bear arms.

SB 303 has already passed in the state Senate, two House Committees and has been endorsed by Governor Bobby Jindal.  This legislation, which would provide for the country’s strongest “right to keep and bear arms” constitutional amendment, still faces an uphill battle on the House floor and needs your help and support.

NRA-ILA ContactPlease contact your state Representative TODAY and urge him or her to support SB 303 in its current form as an “iron-clad” constitutional amendment fortifying the right to keep and bear arms for all Louisianans.  Contact information for your state Representative can be found here.Ribbon-Line

Introduced by state Senator Neil Riser (R-32), SB 303 would improve the current provision in the state constitution and provide Louisianans the strongest and most comprehensive constitutional language of any state, guaranteeing your right to keep and bear arms in Louisiana for future generations.

The language of SB 303 reads:

“The right of each citizen to keep and bear arms is fundamental and shall not be infringed. Any restriction on this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”

Ever since the Louisiana Supreme Court gutted the current right to keep and bears arms provision in 2001, Louisianans have had little protection from overreaching state-imposed gun control or in the event the landmark Heller or McDonald cases are overturned.

In fact, the current Louisiana provision has been so weakened by the state court that it would likely only prevent a complete across-the-board ban on firearms.  By classifying the use of arms as a fundamental right, such as life and free speech, SB 303 would give gun owners the highest level of legal protection available, strengthening and providing a critical defense against future efforts to infringe on Louisianan’s right to keep and bear arms. In other words, SB 303 would put anti-gun extremists immediately on the defensive if and when they try to advance their gun bans.

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Unfortunately, the state Senate failed to remove from the table House Bill 536, permitless carry legislation, before its May 17 deadline.

Because of this Senate inaction, residents of New Hampshire have missed an important opportunity to expand their gun rights.

Introduced by state Representative J.R. Hoell (R-13), this Right-to-Carry reform legislation would have repealed the existing law that requires a person to have a concealed firearm license in order to carry concealed. However, HB 536 would not have eliminated the current carry permitting system, which will still be available for those who wish to participate in reciprocal concealed carry permit agreements when traveling to other states.

In New Hampshire, existing state law allows any citizen who can legally own/possess a firearm to carry it openly, either loaded or unloaded, anywhere in the state.  Since law-abiding citizens are allowed to carry a firearm openly without a permit, they should not become criminals just because they put on a jacket or place their firearm in their purse or briefcase.  Law-abiding citizens do not suddenly turn into violent criminals just because they conceal their firearm.  Additionally, HB 536 would have clarified existing law concerning the sale of pistols and revolvers.

If this bill becomes law, the alert warns gun owners it will “Outlaw Vermont-style [permitless] carry…Establish a national minimum age of 21 for permits; Require that law enforcement be involved in the process (many states simply use NICS checks and county clerks); Insist an applicant prove (to law enforcement satisfaction) that he or she has a “good cause” for requesting a carry permit…and, Force applicants to get that same law enforcement officer to certify they are ‘worthy of the public trust to carry a concealed firearm in public.’”

Camp students will receive expert coaching in the fundamental principles and techniques of conventional and international pistol shooting.

“This is a great opportunity for any youngster who wants to improve his or her pistol skills and advance to national or international levels,” said Head Coach Richard Pearson. “All instruction and coaching will be conducted by outstanding NRA Certified Coaches.”

The camp is primarily designed for intermediate and advanced shooters, but beginners will be accepted on a space-available basis. Shooters need to be at least 12 years old. Students who have not reached their 18th birthday by July 1, 2012, must be accompanied to Camp Perry by an adult sponsor (age 21 or older). An adult may not sponsor more than three junior students.

Enrollment will be limited to 50 students.

The pistol camp activities will not conflict with the .22 cal. stage of the National Pistol Championships, and students enrolled at the pistol camp will be able to also participate in the .22 cal. matches. Entry fees for the National Championships are not included in the camp registration fees.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:

Registration forms and fees for the camp will be accepted at NRA Headquarters on a first-come, first-served basis. For all mailed entries, the earliest postmarks will be used to determine order of acceptance. Registration fees cover all administrative costs and training materials. (The registration fees do not cover other costs such as travel and room and board.)

Travel Expense Reimbursement: First-time campers are eligible for tuition and travel reimbursements up to $500.00 per individual, up to a total of $5000.00 for the entire camp. You must provide receipts and or vehicle mileage. The Ohio Gun Collectors Association generously provides this support.

Advance Registration: The fee for advance registration is $200.00 per student, and must be received by the NRA no later than June 15, 2012.

Standard Registration: The fee for standard registration is $225.00 per student. This fee will be charged for students whose registration materials are received after June 15, 2012 (postmarks will determine acceptance of all mailed materials), or for students who register directly at Camp Perry.

In the case of cancellation, refunds will be issued less a 20 percent administrative fee.

Compound Bow Basics - Waxing Your String And Cables

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- A lot of hunters transitioning from firearm to bow hunting have questions about the maintenance protocols for their newfound tool of choice, the compound bow.

With an eye for detail it is easy to identify when your bow is ready for some maintenance.

If you are more daring you can even buy your own bow press and begin maintaining your bow and working on bows for fellow archers.

There is no set protocol for changing the strings and cables on your bow, but there are some things you can do regularly to maintain your equipment and some cues that your bow is ready for some new “software,” as it were.

String Wax
The first component of bow maintenance is a good string wax. Rub the wax on the exposed portion of the string, then rub it in with your fingers. Repeat on the exposed portion of the cables as well. Finally, remove any excess with a dry, clean cloth. The wax will keep the strings from fraying and will both protect them from both excessive moisture and from drying out. It is common to wax your strings every few times you shoot, however, if you shoot less than monthly it can be a good idea to check the string to see if it needs a little treatment.

If you shoot multiple times per week you may want to apply wax weekly or more often.

The following video gives a visual demonstration as to proper waxing of your string. Be sure to repeat the procedure on each exposed portion of string and cable.
